Autumn Close-Up View of Ryoma

A temporary outdoor platform beside Sakamoto Ryoma’s statue at Katsurahama brings visitors close to its face and up to its Pacific Ocean sightline. About 13 metres high, the seasonal structure changes how you see a familiar Kochi landmark: you can study the statue’s profile and look out to sea from beside it.

The main attraction is the change of viewpoint. From the ground, Ryoma stands high above you; from the seasonal platform, his side profile and the horizon become the focus. The organizer also provides a giant Ryoma face-in-hole panel for commemorative photographs. This is a short outdoor viewing experience, with the sea and the statue as its subjects. It adds a reason to time a Katsurahama visit for autumn if Ryoma or landmark photography interests you. For a separate museum visit, the optional combination ticket includes the Kochi Prefectural Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum. The platform admission alone does not include that museum.

Ekin: Stories Told, Stories Retold

Adult tickets ¥1,200 advance / ¥1,500 on the day; university students ¥1,000, high-school age and younger free. Admission is free on 3 Nov for the museum anniversary. Discover Ekin’s dramatic paintings alongside the living traditions that preserve them in Kochi. This is the prefectural museum exhibition, with its own ticket and holiday schedule.

Open Kochi in Google Maps

Start at Kochi Station, then choose your city core

Use JR Kochi Station as your arrival hub. Kochi Travel Square and the Tosa Terrace visitor information centre are immediately outside the South Exit, where you can check a city map and onward travel plans. Keep a central Kochi visit separate from a trip to Katsurahama on the coast: the castle belongs to the city-core plan, while Katsurahama needs its own outward and return transport.

  • For a short stay, choose the central area first. Decide whether there is time for the coast only after checking both bus directions against your onward departure.
  • The Katsurahama local bus departs from the station's North Exit bus terminal, separate from the South Exit travel square. Check which side of the station you need before setting off.

Let Kochi Castle anchor a coherent city focus

Kochi Castle can anchor a central walking visit if your group is comfortable on foot. If walking from the station is less suitable, take a tram from Kochi Ekimae toward Sanbashi, change at Harimayabashi to a westbound tram, and alight at Kochijo-mae (Kochi Castle) for the remaining walk. Harimayabashi is a transfer point on this route; the tram ride does not take you into the castle.

  • Use walking for the central streets and castle approach when weather, luggage and energy allow. The tram is an alternative for the urban leg, not a way to reach Katsurahama.
  • Before leaving the centre for the coast, allow time for the castle visit and the transfer to your bus stop. Keep extra stops optional so the return to Kochi Station remains realistic.

Choose Katsurahama as a separate coastal commitment

Katsurahama in Urado is a separate coastal journey, not a casual extension of the central walking circuit. A direct public-transport option is Tosaden's Katsurahama Line: board a Katsurahama-bound local bus at bay 5 of Kochi Station's North Exit bus terminal, or at Minami Harimayabashi in the centre, and alight at Katsurahama. Confirm the destination display. Tosaden has published a timetable revision effective October 1, 2026; use the timetable valid for your travel date and check current service and park notices.

  • Before the outward trip, choose a return bus from Katsurahama toward Kochi Station Bus Terminal using the correct weekday or weekend/holiday timetable. Allow for reaching the stop, waiting, road delays and the walk to your onward railway platform; do not rely on a last-minute connection after a late coastal stop.
  • A taxi may suit a group whose timing or walking needs do not fit the bus. Arrange the pickup and return plan before relying on it; availability, traffic and cost vary. If neither return option leaves enough margin, keep this visit to central Kochi.

Use the Katsurahama coast image as location context, not as proof of an event, bus operation or sea conditions. The coast is a separate current-service commitment from central Kochi.

53rd Ryoma Festival 2026

This one-day Ryoma-themed festival can suit travelers who want a focused late-year stop with planned youth kendo, experience booths and workshops. The official page lists free admission and no advance application, but recheck it before committing because entry conditions and operations can change.

The official 2026 event page schedules the festival for November 15 from 10:00 to 16:00. Treat this as a current plan recorded on August 19, not a guarantee that the event will take place.
