Bansuiso brings together 55 artists from 12 countries for an international contemporary-art exhibition inside its historic French-style villa. Art Connection explores different ideas and materials in rooms built for a very different era, adding an art stop to a visit around Matsuyama Castle.
The setting is central to the experience. Completed in 1922, Bansuiso has a history as a place of hospitality and social gatherings; this exhibition places contemporary expression within that architectural setting. Look at how a work’s material, scale and mood relate to the room around it, rather than treating the building simply as a container for pictures.
The participating artists come from Japan, South Korea, the United States and countries across Europe and Asia. The appeal is the range of approaches gathered in one historic place: compare works across that variety rather than expecting a single artist’s retrospective. This is a useful pairing for visitors interested in both contemporary art and the villa’s French-style architecture.

The Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum’s 19th thematic exhibition explores the knowledge, judgement and abilities of Meiji figures in politics, diplomacy and the military. Documents and personal objects connect people appearing in the novel with the turbulent years around the 1894 Sino-Japanese War, the Triple Intervention and growing tensions between Japan and Russia.
Five objects offer different ways into that history: Saigo Tsugumichi’s admiral shoulder boards, an Order of the Sacred Treasure breast star associated with Hayashi Tadasu, Tamura Iyozo’s military-academy diploma, a letter from Akashi Motojiro to Kato Takusen, and dagger fittings owned by Yamamoto Gonnohyoe. They bring correspondence, education, rank and public service into the same exhibition.
Compare what each kind of object can tell you. A letter is evidence of communication between people, a diploma records training, and insignia makes an official position visible. Looking at these differences gives a more varied account of the people behind the novel than a sequence of battles alone. The exhibition’s use of “intelligence” centres on historical wisdom and capability in a period of international crisis.

Visitor planning notes
For a short stay, make the Matsuyama Castle–Dogo choice the core and treat suburban or island stops as separate extensions. If weather or a connection becomes uncertain, drop the outer extension first and recheck current official transport and opening details; fares, timetables and live service are not promised here.
JR Matsuyama Station is the JR rail arrival hub. Matsuyama-shi Station, also called Matsuyama City Station, is a separate Iyotetsu rail and bus hub; they are not the same station. Airport and tourist-port arrivals are separate again. Choose the hub on your onward ticket before planning sightseeing.
For a first visit arriving by JR, use JR Matsuyama Station → Okaido and the castle-side core → Dogo Onsen, adding Dogo only if the return margin permits.
From the JR Matsuyama-ekimae tram stop, take Iyotetsu tram Route 5 toward Dogo Onsen and get off at Okaido. If you arrive at Matsuyama-shi instead, Route 3 toward Dogo Onsen joins the same core at Okaido.
Keep Dogo and the castle as the compact core
Use Okaido as the walking base for the central shopping streets and the approach to Matsuyama Castle's ropeway/lift station. The castle itself is uphill: allow for the ascent and further walking even when using the ropeway. Keep local walks within this core, and use the tram for the separate move to Dogo.
After the castle/core, return to Okaido tram stop and take Route 5 toward Dogo Onsen to its terminus, then walk into the bath district. Treat Dogo as a second area with its own visit and return allowance.
Check current Iyotetsu service information and the castle and Dogo opening notices before committing. Keep island or suburban travel outside this first-visit plan.
Choose Matsuyama for depth, not a port-hopping day
For an onward JR departure, return from Okaido or Dogo Onsen on Route 5 toward JR Matsuyama-ekimae, then walk to JR Matsuyama Station. From the castle, include the descent and walk back to Okaido; from Dogo, include the walk back to its tram terminus and the longer ride through the core.
Work backward from your fixed onward departure, leaving room for walking, tram waiting, the ride and circulation or transfers inside the departure station. If your ticket instead leaves from Matsuyama-shi, choose Route 3 toward Matsuyama-shi from Okaido or Dogo; check the destination before boarding.
If weather worsens, walking becomes tiring or the onward margin shrinks, keep only the castle/Okaido core and skip Dogo and outer extensions. If already in Dogo, shorten that visit and start the return earlier, subject to current service.
A city route anchor that keeps the day clear
Choose the main city decision first, then let current transport, weather and the return plan determine whether another stop fits.
Use the Bansuiso image as central Matsuyama context near the castle-side city stop. Keep the castle approach, downtown arcade and tram continuation to Dogo as separate choices rather than a guaranteed-duration itinerary.

Gogoshima Autumn Festival Funadori Dedication 2026
This island traditional-performance day can suit travelers who want a focused Matsuyama cultural stop built around the planned Funadori dedication and Momijigari program. Official pages list free admission or viewing and no advance reservation, but that does not guarantee entry, capacity or live operation.

Official 2026 pages schedule the dedication for October 3. Treat this as a current plan recorded on August 19, not a guarantee that the event will take place; the published component times conflict, so recheck the organizer page before departure.
Area
The two announced venues are the Former Tomari Elementary School Gymnasium at 618-10 Tomarimachi and the Gogoshima Elementary and Junior High School Gymnasium at 425-3 Tomarimachi, both in Matsuyama. Use the venue names as planning anchors; no entrance, route or travel time is established here.
Official pages say to use the ferry and state that there are no buses or taxis on the island. Recheck ferry operation and the organizer notice before departure; occurrence, cancellation, capacity, weather, crowding, parking and accessibility remain unverified.
