The 111th Suimeikai — Pontocho
Pontocho’s 111th Suimeikai presents a six-day autumn programme at Pontocho Kaburenjo. One performance begins daily at 15:30, with doors at 15:00. The repertoire combines tokiwazu, kiyomoto and nagauta works, while Kyoto City Tourism Association describes the total running time as under two hours without publishing an exact finish.

Visitor verdict
The programme opens with the tokiwazu piece Matsu no Hagoromo and the kiyomoto work Yasuna, then expands into the nagauta sequence Hana Koi Pontocho Ade Kurabe. Its sections move through Sukeroku, Onna Date, Yoshiwara Suzume, Shichifukujin, Rokusai Nenbutsu, Shizuhata Obi, Fuji Ondo and Sagi Musume before the finale. This gives the performance a defined dramatic and musical arc rather than a generic showcase. Choose Suimeikai for Pontocho’s own autumn repertoire and historic theatre setting. The single daily start makes it an itinerary anchor: arrive for 15:00 doors, and keep the evening flexible because “under two hours” is not an exact end time.
Practical information
- Reservation
- Reservation requirement not confirmed. Check the official page before visiting.
- Tickets / booking
- Reserved seats cost ¥10,000 or ¥8,000; unreserved admission is ¥5,000. Online buyers choose a date and quantity but cannot select a reserved seat. After payment, the association emails a PDF voucher to exchange on the day; phone booking is also listed. Wheelchair arrangements differ by tier: reserved accessible seating is limited and requires a note plus telephone inquiry, while the official shop says the ¥5,000 unreserved area has no wheelchair-accessible seats. Check current availability before purchase.
- Price note
- Reserved seats are ¥10,000 or ¥8,000; unreserved admission is ¥5,000. Seat selection is unavailable. Wheelchair arrangements vary by tier, and the unreserved area has no wheelchair-accessible seats.
- Access
- Pontocho Kaburenjo is about five minutes on foot from Keihan Sanjo Station exit 6. The organizer also lists about ten minutes from Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station exit 1 and five minutes from the Kawaramachi Sanjo bus stop. There is no venue parking.
- Rain
- The performance is indoors. The narrow streets and walk from Sanjo or Kawaramachi are the weather-sensitive part, so allow extra time before the 15:00 doors.
- Crowds
- The organizer does not publish a crowd forecast. The official shop warns that unreserved admission may become standing room if seats are full; this is a condition, not a statement of current availability.
Recommended for
Visitors choosing Pontocho for its named tokiwazu, kiyomoto and nagauta repertoire, and travellers who can decide deliberately between reserved admission and the lower-priced unreserved area. The fixed 15:30 start works as a central-Kyoto afternoon anchor when the evening remains flexible.
Not recommended for
Do not assume the three ticket prices differ only by seat location. Reserved buyers cannot select an exact seat, accessible reserved seating is limited and needs advance contact, and the official shop says the unreserved area has no wheelchair-accessible seats and may become standing room when full.
Nearby / itinerary
- Nearby spots
- The theatre can anchor a Pontocho and central Kyoto afternoon. Plan any riverside or neighbourhood walk before the 15:00 doors, and avoid fixing a post-show reservation to an assumed finish time.
- Itinerary hint
- Choose the ticket tier before arranging the day: resolve wheelchair seating with the organizer if needed, and do not rely on an unreserved seat remaining available. Reach Pontocho Kaburenjo for the 15:00 doors and 15:30 start, place any riverside or neighbourhood walk beforehand, and leave the evening flexible because 'under two hours' is not an exact finish.
