Baba Residence: Autumn Courtyard Opening

The middle gate gives this seasonal opening a particular meaning: in the Edo period, it was opened for visits by the Suwa lord of Takashima. Passing through it lets you look at the relationship between the main household, the courtyard and the retirement house. A waterwheel once turned in the courtyard; today, that history helps explain how the estate combined buildings and landscape. The wider residence includes an 1851 main house in the regional honmune-zukuri style and an imposing front gate with longhouses built in 1859. Compare the carefully designed reception spaces with everyday living spaces, then look at the woodland and earth banks around the estate. An 1895 house plan helped guide the restoration, giving the visit a connection to how the family actually arranged its home.

Admission is free for everyone. The autumn-opening notice does not specify an application process. Separate tea gatherings and other residence activities have their own notices; they are not included in every courtyard visit.

Access

The address is 357-6 Uchida, Matsumoto. On weekdays, take the Uchida bus from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Babake Jutaku Higashi, then walk 250 m west toward the house. The Uchida line does not run on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. Another approach is Kotobukidai Higashiguchi on the Kotobukidai or Matsubara route, followed by a 1 km walk south. A bus from JR Murai Station toward Matsumoto also serves that stop. Free parking is available at the residence.

Rain

The special experience includes an outdoor courtyard, so rain and the condition of the paths matter. The residence may change or cancel the opening at short notice. If weather or step-free access will determine your visit, ask the residence about that day’s arrangements before travelling to Uchida.

Crowds

The middle gate and courtyard open from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. The six specifically announced holiday openings are 21–23 September, 12 October, and 3 and 23 November; these supplement the wider opening period. During the September and October portion of the event, the posted closures are 15, 24 and 29 September and 6, 13, 20 and 27 October. The Tuesday/next-weekday closure rule also applies in November.

Nearby spots

Within the residence’s wider setting, the estate woodland, earth banks and shrine beside an old zelkova help show how the buildings sit in the landscape. The front-gate outlook also connects the house with the Matsumoto plain and Northern Alps, when visibility allows.

Itinerary hint

Choose your transport first, especially for a weekend or holiday when the Uchida line is unavailable. Compare the main house and front gate before taking the seasonal courtyard route, leaving time to return to your chosen bus stop before the last useful service.
