Ashimori Irodori Market

Ashimori Plaza’s courtyard hosts a one-day market of local produce, bread and handmade goods on 20 September. Ashimori melons, rice bread, woodwork and bamboo crafts give the visit a distinct local focus, while a separate sake tasting introduces the area’s brewing tradition.

Visitor verdict

The current flyer names produce including Ashimori melons and eggs, rice bread from JA Pan Kobo, woodwork from Asunaro Kobo and bamboo crafts from Takezaiku no Kai. The city’s notice also lists vegetables, fruit and handmade pottery. These offerings make it possible to combine something to eat with browsing useful or decorative craft goods; individual items and quantities depend on the sellers. Itano Shuzo is listed for the local sake tasting. That tasting also takes place on 19 September, but the main market is only on 20 September, 10:00–15:00. You can visit the produce and craft stalls without taking part in the tasting. This is a sales market, so do not plan on a hands-on craft workshop unless the organizer separately announces one.

Practical information

Reservation
Reservation is usually not required
Tickets / booking
Entry is free; food, produce and craft purchases cost extra. No advance booking requirement is announced for the main market. The notice does not state a sake-tasting price, so ask before participating. The additional tasting on 19 September does not make the market a two-day event.
Price note
Free market entry; food and goods charged separately. Sake-tasting price is not stated; participants must be aged 20 or over and not driving.
Access
Ashimori Plaza is at 979 Ashimori, Kita-ku, Okayama, with the market in its courtyard. From Ashimori Station on the JR Momotaro Line, the taxi journey is about five minutes. Taxis are not stationed there: reserve ahead, and arrange the return as well. City tourism lists Mitsuwa Taxi, 086-299-0411, and Takamatsu Taxi, 086-287-2009. The free Kibi Roman circulation bus serves Jinyamachi Ashimori; check the day’s timetable before relying on it. The event flyer identifies parking at Ashimori Plaza, the tourist parking area, the former merchant Fujita residence and the Ashimori domain samurai residence. Drivers must not join the sake tasting.
Rain
The market goes ahead in light rain and is cancelled in severe weather. Check the current city or prefectural event notice before making the journey if the weather is unsettled, particularly when you have booked a taxi connection.
Crowds
No stall count or full-day stock commitment is published. If a particular melon, bread or craft item is the reason for your visit, leave time to browse earlier rather than counting on it being available near 15:00. Purchases and tasting are separate decisions, not an admission package.

Recommended for

Visitors interested in small local markets, regional produce and craft goods, especially those already planning time in Ashimori’s historic streets. The mix of food and handmade items gives companions with different interests several ways to browse.

Not recommended for

This may be a less convenient choice for a tightly timed trip relying on an unbooked taxi at Ashimori Station. Sake tasting is only for visitors aged 20 or over who are not driving; that restriction applies to tasting, not to ordinary market entry.

Nearby / itinerary

Nearby spots
The courtyard market can be paired with a walk through Ashimori’s historic neighbourhood. Keep the market’s limited hours in view, and check the opening arrangements of any residence you wish to enter; the market notice does not include admission to neighbouring buildings.
Itinerary hint
Choose your transport first, then fit the market and a nearby walk within the 10:00–15:00 window. Confirm the return taxi or the free circulation bus’s last useful departure before browsing. Okayama City’s event page and current flyer explain the offerings and station taxi constraint; the prefectural tourism page confirms the courtyard venue, free entry and weather rule. Ashimori Plaza handles event enquiries on 086-295-0001.
