Start with what you actually need
Connectivity is easier to choose when you describe the job before looking at a plan. Consider how you expect to use maps, messages, translation, reservation details and accommodation information, and whether you need a connection as soon as you land or only after reaching a base. Then separate data from the things tied to your usual number: calls, SMS and account verification can matter differently for different travelers and services. Think about the device you will carry, whether anyone else needs to connect, and whether one connection must support a laptop or another device. A short trip, a longer stay, a solo traveler and a group can all lead to different trade-offs. There is no one option that is automatically best for Japan. The useful outcome is a short list of requirements you can compare against current provider terms.
