12th Chin Jukan and Naeshirogawa

Reimeikan marks 120 years since the death of the 12th Chin Jukan (1835–1906) with ceramics and documents tracing his work and the history of Naeshirogawa. The exhibition connects a community descended from Korean potters with Satsuma ware’s development for overseas markets, bringing objects, designs and business records into the same story.

Look closely at the decorated tiger and Ohara-woman figures by the 12th Chin Jukan, both from the later nineteenth century. Their modelled shapes offer a different way to understand ceramic decoration from the broad painted surface of an 1857 blue-and-white dish showing pine, bamboo, plum, cranes and tortoises. Comparing the figures and the dish makes the range of form and ornament concrete. Documents widen that view beyond individual objects. A Naeshirogawa history record connects the ceramics with the community, while an 1892 catalogue of items intended for the Chicago exposition reveals the world of overseas display and trade. The exhibition follows Korean customs retained under the domain’s protection and control, and Chin Jukan’s pottery enterprise, 玉光山陶器製造場. Read the vessels and figures alongside those records to see how local production became part of a wider commercial story.

Open Kagoshima in Google Maps

Use Kagoshima-Chuo, Tenmonkan and the waterfront as different planning anchors

Use Kagoshima-Chuo Station as your main rail arrival and onward-transfer anchor. For Tenmonkan, follow the East Exit signs to Kagoshima-Chuo-Ekimae and take city tram Route 2 toward Kagoshima-Ekimae, getting off at Tenmonkan-dori. Check the route number and destination display before boarding.

  • Keep walking within your chosen Tenmonkan group when weather and energy allow. Use the tram for the station approach when saving walking effort matters.
  • The waterfront ferry terminal is a separate stop from Tenmonkan. For that direction, Route 2 toward Kagoshima-Ekimae serves Suizokukan-guchi; continue on foot following signs to the Kagoshima Port Sakurajima Ferry Terminal.

Choose Sakurajima as a separate movement decision

The Sakurajima Ferry connects Kagoshima Port with Sakurajima Port across Kinko Bay. Reaching the city-side waterfront is only the approach: crossing to Sakurajima, moving onward there and coming back require a separate transport and time decision.

  • Before crossing, check the ferry operator's current timetable and service notices in both directions. Weather and sea conditions can affect the journey; leave room for boarding and getting off as well as the crossing.
  • For a short stop, keep one city-side focus. Add Sakurajima only when the return ferry and city-side transfer fit your onward plans; an overnight stay can leave that separate commitment for another day.

Let the stay shape decide the second commitment

To return from Tenmonkan-dori or Suizokukan-guchi, take city tram Route 2 toward Korimoto via Kagoshima-Chuo-Ekimae and get off at Kagoshima-Chuo-Ekimae for the railway station. Confirm Route 2 and the via-station direction rather than relying on the destination name alone.

  • Before a fixed rail, Shinkansen or other departure, allow for walking to the stop, waiting, the tram ride and movement through Kagoshima-Chuo Station. If you visit Sakurajima, also protect time for reaching Sakurajima Port, boarding, the return crossing and the walk back to the city tram.
  • If weather worsens, walking tolerance drops or the ferry or onward-connection margin is poor, keep one central city group and skip the crossing. If already on Sakurajima, shorten the visit and prioritise an earlier return when service permits.

A city route anchor that keeps the day clear

Choose the main city decision first, then let current transport, weather and the return plan determine whether another stop fits.

Keep one city-side culture branch before the ferry commitment

Reimeikan is a city-side history and culture branch. Choose it only after checking current opening, and make Sakurajima a separate ferry and return decision.
